MANDATE
In the fall of 1995, Grant Mitchell Hunter began to write his first set of sketches and songs that would soon become part of his first musical comedy revue: MEDIOCRE EXPECTATIONS. The theme of the first show was to exploit and explore every aspect of our expectations in love and life.
Themes would become very important. Grant once read a review that simply stated, before a sketch is written, there should be a reason for that sketch to be written. He took that simple advice, and now claims that there must be a clear reason before he writes any work (but he doesnt have to change the world). The overall mandate of Sketch Cafe Productions is to write and produce original musical theatre.
BIOGRAPHY
Grant Mitchell Hunter tends to ramble and go off on tangents. He has university degrees in communications (film production) and mathematics (calculus
yup). He trained and performed with the Vancouver Theatresports Rookie League from 91 95. Hes worked for a film production house. Hes written for a local arts magazine and was contributing writer on the comedy pilot THE SUNSET GRILLE.
In 1996, he formed the Break-Even Players (soon to become the Café Players). He wrote, produced, and acted in several productions until the Players informally disbanded in 2004. A highlight was an appearance at the Vancouver International Comedy Festival in 1999. He has also received honorable mentions for the songs YESTERDAY and LOVE (Dont Let Me Down) in the Billboard and John Lennon Songwriting Competitions.
During this time, Grant also wrote and produced a pop CD, Wylder, and a sketch comedy pilot, THE SKETCH CAFÉ.
Now, he is happy in the role of writer/composer and looks forward to seeing his full-length musical OUR WEDDING STORY finally reach the stage.
THE SKETCH CAFE
THE SKETCH CAFÉ is the umbrella under which Grant Mitchell Hunter writes. Originally, Sketch Café Productions worked with the original mandate to write and produce original musical theatre. Offshoots of the theatrical productions included performing sketch comedy at clubs and the Vancouver International Comedy Festival. Then Grant explored pop projects, television scoring, and produced a comedy pilot DVD called THE SKETCH CAFE.
Jaded was one of three sketches produced for the television comedy pilot demo: THE SKETCH CAFÉ. With special permission from the UBCP, it features choreography by union member Shelley Stewart Hunt, and union actors Hunt and Heather Feeney. Also featured are Grant Mitchell Hunter, Colette Peake, David Blue, Cecile Roslin, and Michael Croteau. Other sketches in the pilot include Codependents Anonymous and The Coffee Shop Pick-up.
SCORING FOR FILM
As another musical experiment, Grant wrote four short musical clips as samples of TV/film themes in 2003. Three were co-writes with engineer Craig Zurba.
